For many years, outdoor fabrics were chosen primarily for their ability to withstand sunlight, moisture and frequent use. Functionality came before aesthetics: relatively stiff surfaces, neutral colours and the inevitable nautical-inspired stripes defined terraces, gardens and poolside spaces.
Today, the landscape has changed completely. Thanks to ongoing research into yarns and weaving techniques, outdoor fabrics have reached such a high level of visual and tactile quality that the distinction between indoor and outdoor is becoming increasingly blurred.
The latest collections no longer resemble technical materials. Soft bouclés, richly textured weaves, linen- and wool-like effects, chenilles, jacquards and decorative patterns have transformed outdoor fabric into a true design tool. The technology remains hidden within the fibre, while softness, colour and depth come to the surface.
This is why it is now more accurate to speak of indoor-outdoor fabrics: materials durable enough to live outside, yet refined enough to be used indoors without compromise, whether in a living room, kitchen or bedroom.

With Barfleur, Pierre Frey brings the richness of its decorative archives outdoors. Botanical motifs, tartans, stripes and large-scale patterns unfold across a warm palette of deep greens, rust, wood and caramel tones. Fabrics such as Alençon, inspired by a historic design, demonstrate how even a complex, narrative motif can be reinterpreted for indoor/outdoor use.
With the Madère collection, Casamance focuses instead on texture. The weaves recall traditional basketry, bouclé yarns create irregular surfaces, and the colours evoke the vegetation and light of the island of Madeira. The result is a technical fabric that retains a warm, handcrafted appearance.
With Îles du Vent, Lelièvre explores the tropical world through natural textures and tones. Aruba features a soft, three-dimensional bouclé surface, while Trinidad recreates the appearance and drape of linen. These fabrics are designed for outdoor use, yet look perfectly at home on an indoor sofa or curtain.
Manuel Canovas introduces greater decorative freedom with Corti Indoor/Outdoor Weaves. Botanical designs, geometric patterns, stripes and exotic motifs demonstrate that outdoor spaces do not necessarily have to be understated or minimalist: they can possess the same personality and richness of colour as a living room.
Nobilis also explores the illusion of natural textures. In the Suna and Nausicaa collections, fabrics such as Cima, Dune and Borneo recall wool, raffia or velvet, despite being made from technical fibres specifically designed to offer greater resistance to sunlight and moisture.
These materials are not only suitable for terraces and gardens. They can also be used in the most frequently lived-in areas of the home, from kitchen benches and dining chairs to sofas, armchairs and cushions. They are particularly well suited to seaside homes, interiors with large windows, houses shared with children or pets, and contract spaces, where beauty and practicality must inevitably coexist.
The same transformation can be seen in outdoor furniture. Tables, sofas and armchairs are no longer designed simply as durable pieces, but as elements capable of offering the comfort and proportions traditionally associated with indoor interiors.
Aluminium makes it possible to create lightweight, slender structures, while stainless steel lends a more architectural character and teak introduces warmth and natural beauty. Technical ropes and synthetic weaves recreate the appearance of natural fibres, while stoneware, ceramics, sintered stone and composite materials are used to create surfaces that are both durable and visually refined.
Upholstery has evolved as well. Quick-drying, breathable materials allow seating to dry more rapidly, while covers and stitching are carefully designed to ensure comfort, durability and ease of maintenance. The technology is no longer visible, but can be felt in the freedom with which each piece can be enjoyed.
Outdoor rugs complete this new concept of space. No longer simply an accessory, they have become elements capable of defining a true open-air room. They frame conversation areas, bring tables and seating together, and create continuity between the living room and the terrace.
Pierre Frey offers rugs from its In/Outdoor collection, designed to be used both inside and outside. Lelièvre complements Îles du Vent with Amure and Estran, rugs with a textile, handcrafted appearance, yet made from fibres suitable for outdoor spaces.
Indoor/outdoor fabrics, rugs and furniture therefore make it possible to move beyond the traditional boundary between the home and the garden. A texture can continue from an indoor sofa to the cushions on the terrace, a colour can flow through a large window, and the wood used in the living room can enter into a dialogue with the outdoor furniture.
